{"id":20,"date":"2018-10-07T20:24:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-07T20:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/islandtraverse.wordpress.com\/?page_id=20"},"modified":"2020-01-01T23:30:38","modified_gmt":"2020-01-01T23:30:38","slug":"pilgrimage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/it.johnmark.net.au\/index.php\/pilgrimage\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilgrimage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last 7 years we have walked a number of pilgrimage routes in Portugal, Spain and Italy.\u00a0 These typically weave their way through settled countryside, stopping in towns and villages, maybe two, three or even four a day.\u00a0 Mostly accommodation and food is found en route.\u00a0 One carries minimum gear &#8211; certainly not a tent, not more than a day&#8217;s food and no cooking gear.<\/p>\n<p>For us, this walk is quite different.\u00a0 We may well go up to seven days without sighting other people let alone a town.\u00a0 We will need to be totally self reliant even down to finding our way through open wilderness where there are no tracks.\u00a0 We will need food drops cached along the way (Put there ahead of time by us where we come close or cross roads).<\/p>\n<p>While there is likely to be a distinct shortage of churches and monasteries practising hospitality to pilgrims on this route, we are very conscious we will be in the cathedral of God&#8217;s creation and spending time with him.\u00a0 This is very much a spiritual journey for us and we are looking forward to this aspect of it.<\/p>\n<p>We both enjoy the Celtic rhythms of spiritual life and hope to weave these into the walk.\u00a0 Below are some Prayers for the Journey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.piemonteexpo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/via-francigena.png\" alt=\"Related image\" width=\"227\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The Pilgrim Prayer  <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God be with us over every mountain,  <br>Jesus be with us through every valley,<br>Spirit be with us across every  stream.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each lake and ridge, <br>Each moor and plain,<br>Each \nforest and beach,<br>Speaks the way of God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God be with us each lying down,<br>Jesus be with us each \nrising up,<br>Spirit be with us each step of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each shelter found,<br>Each summit reached,<br>Each \ncrossing safe,<br>Speaks the care of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God shine your sun upon us,<br>Jesus shade us with your \nclouds,<br>Spirit refresh us with your breeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each thought of hearth and home,<br>Each care of person \ndear,<br>Each gift of place to dwell,<br>Speaks the love of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God guide us through this day,<br>Jesus help us on our \nway,<br>Spirit bring us safe home again. <br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Extended and adapted from ideas in the <br>Carmina \nGadelica<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The places of God<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God be with us as we answer the call<br>God be with us as \nwe prepare our hearts<br>God be with us as we pack our bags<br>God farewell us \nas we lock our door <br>and leave the place you have given us.&nbsp; <br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Morning Prayer<\/em><\/strong><br>We arise to \nthis new day to the glory of God<br>We give thanks, Jesus for sustenance for our \nway<br>We pack and step forward to follow, Holy Spirit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three in one \u2013 Light the way before us<br>Three in one \u2013 \nWalk along beside us<br>Three in one \u2013 Watch the way behind us<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May we walk through this day in praise to you<br>Father, \nSon and Holy Spirit<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Evening Prayer<\/strong><\/em><br>We lay down \nto rest this night to the glory of God<br>We give thanks, Jesus for watching \nover us today<br>We dwell in your shelter, Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three in one \u2013 Grant us sleep in safety<br>Three in one \u2013 \nGrant us rest to refresh us<br>Three in one \u2013 Watch over us through this \nnight<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May we rest through this night in praise to \nyou<br>Father, Son and Holy Spirit.&nbsp;
